"The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. We believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives."

But what does this mean for Newport and Severnside, for local people and everyday life?
For us, it means getting out of your way. It means speaking up and challenging power - and complacency. It means giving power back to you, finding new ways of including people in decisions. It means people living safe, happy lives with opportunity - so services that work for you, that are easy to understand, and are answerable to you as residents.
It means we will be transparent, we will care about everyone no matter where they live, or what resources they have. It means we will fight hard to make our city and surrounding communities a welcoming place to live and visit.
It also means we will be radical, think differently, and be creative. We are not attached to old ways of doing it just because it's always been done.
We want people's voices to be heard. And if any of this resonates with you, we think you might share our values too.
